90's Childhood - Boy Meets World

If there is anything new that is coming from my 90’s childhood memories that may be good, it is the sequel to Boy Meets World. While I can not yet say if it is a good thing or a bad thing just yet, I can only feel that if they keep the same lessons and the same tone as the first series, another generation will have the magic of learning from a teacher that truly cares, even if it’s just acting.

Stop Ruining My Childhood!

The 90s kids are used to it by now. Remakes, sequels, prequels, all about our favorite show/movie/book.

We’ve accepted that it would happen and that it could turn out alright but probably would need to be burned in a horrible fire. We did it to our parent’s memories and now the next generation is starting to do it to ours. But this is where I draw the line.

Glee is doing a mash-up of “Bye, Bye, Bye” and “I Want It That Way”.

Let me repeat that.

Glee is doing a mash-up of “Bye, Bye Bye” from N’Sync and “I Want It That Way” from The Backstreet Boys.

Yes, you read that right. They are taking two songs from the main rivaled boy bands (Sorry, 98 Degrees!) and mashing their songs! YOU DON’T DO THAT! You are a fan of one or the other, not both. You do not play their songs in the same playlist. You do not admit that you secretly do like both, you instead keep steadfast to your argument about which band is better.

THERE IS NO OTHER OPTION FOR A 90’s KID!

I thought my childhood had been battered and bruised before, but this? This just blew my childhood into tiny pieces buried and mourned for.

Admittedly, it is a “dueling” mash-up and not one just straight up but that doesn’t make up for it. What do you think of it?

A Mayonnaise Jar and Two Beers

(Borrowed this from Facebook!)

When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and the 2 Beers.

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, he wordlessly picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and oured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with an unanimous ‘yes’.

The professor then produced two Beers from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed.

‘Now,’said the professor as the laughter subsided, ‘I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things—-your family, your children, your health, your friends and your favorite passions—-and if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.

The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house and your car.

The sand is everything else—-the small stuff.

‘If you put the sand into the jar first,’ he continued, ‘there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff you will never have room for the things that are important to you.

‘Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Spend time with your children. Spend time with your parents. Visit with grandparents.
Take time to get medical checkups. Take your spouse out to dinner. Play another 18.There will always be time to clean the house and fix the
disposal. Take care of the golf balls first—-the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.’

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the Beer represented.

The professor smiled and said, ‘I’m glad you asked.’

The Beer just shows you that no matter how full your life may seem, there’s always room for a couple of Beers with a friend.’

I’ve had this dream. I’ve had it since I was about 12 that I wanted to move people with the words thag I wrote.

I had found my constant, my solace, my haven in both the words I read and the ones I wrote. I used to write all the time through middle school and high school.

But then I grew up.

How do you change the stories written under duress and begging to be let out through ink or blood or tears or however they need to come out to appear when calm? I used to write because if I didn’t, the emotion, the scene would not leave me alone.

But now I’ve grown up. I’m not the same terrified, wishful, lonely little girl I used to be. Rather than write by emotion I have to plan it out. How does one assimilate that change of character to their dream?

The Dating Game: Valentine’s Day

I could tell you stories, upon stories, upon stories about how this day created a number of my friend’s relationships. I could also tell you about 95% did not stay together.

I have found myself to be a cynic on this day of love which is not helped by the fact that I am single, work in a mail room at a buisness office and deliver flowers all day, and the fact that I am working until who knows when tonight with the other job (and that’s just this year).

What makes this day so popular and great? Why do I have to receive flowers and chocolates today instead of the third Tuesday in June?

With many of the guys I have encountered, I found that this day does two things. 1. Delay the first date so as not to deal with the holiday or 2. Increase the likihood of a breakup much earlier to also avoid the day. Similar effects have been produced by birthdays and Christmas.

It’s ridiculous and I could spend hours on this topic alone. But I won’t.

What are your thoughts on the day?

An Epic Challenge: Rory Gilmore’s Books (3)

I’m sorry this is so late in the month! I took a trip at the end of January, had an event to run the next weekend and then got a nasty cold that had me laid up all last weekend. I’ve got some spare time at work today, so I’ll update you on where I’m at!

Starting January 10th until today, I’ve only gotten through seven novels and one poem (The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe).

This is not good. The majority of the stories only, or should only, take me a day or two to read but a few of them have been difficult to get through!

My last book finished was “The Sound and The Fury” by William Faulkner. That was a hard book to get through since it was not in a strict gramatical fashion. Many details were left out which made it difficult to just sit down and read. Nearing the end of “1984” by George Orwell, I also had trouble.

“Cujo” by Stephen King honestly bored me. I know it became a horror movie (which I have yet to see) but I don’t see the true horror behind the story. It was a tragedy, yes, but not all that thrilling of a read.

I’m glad to finally be through “Frankenstein” and “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde”. “Marathon Man” by  William Goldman was a good read, and I also enjoyed “The House of Sand and Fog” by Andre Dubas III.

Currently, I am reading “Unless” by Carol Shields. I’m only a handful of pages in and am torn on if I will enjoy it or not. It certaintly has potential to me, but I’m unsure if it will fullfill it.

I have also been reading through “Moby Dick” by Herman Melville. I have an app (who doesn’t?) for books on my phone and was able to retrieve the book in e-form for free. When I am out and need to kill some time, I often open it up to attempt to get through a few pages. I expect I might finally finish that one by March!

As you can see, I have many more books to go (with collections counting for too many of them). I’ll try to update at the beginning of March with the next handful of books I get through so that I can space the months back to as close to 30 days as possible. It will certaintly be a challenge to get through the rest of these!
